What is the definition of Material deprivation
A lack of resources and a lack of ability to purchase goods and services, compared with other members of society
What impact does Material deprivation have
-Exclusion and deviant is a lot more likely and common
around 90% of failing schools are located in deprived areas
-Flaherty 2004 says money problems in the family are a significant factor in younger children attendance at school
What are the effects of poverty on school life
-Being able to afford uniforms, school trips, transport to school. Classroom materials can lead to students being isolated which can lead to bullying
-Pupils are unlikely to have a computer ,desk ,educational toys ,books or a space to do their homework
-Part time work is also more likely to be undertaken meaning taking time away from studies
How housing is effected by material deprivation
-Overcrowding
-Lack of space
-Frequent moving if no permanent accommodation
- psychological distress
How is Diet and health effected by material deprivation
-Young people poorer homes wont get enough nutrients
-Poor nutrition affects health which effect concentration levels
What is the fear of debt
-Working class students are less likely to receive financial support from loans due to the loans believing they wont pay it back
-dropout rates increase because education is unaffordable
What advantages do students with better off backgrounds have (Donald Hirsch)
-More likely to have structure out of school work and activities
-They had more space making it easier for them to do their work
-More likely to benefit from private education
what is the definition of cultural deprivation
Cultural deprivation means being deprived of cultural attributes necessary for educational success
What does the Centre of Longitudinal studies 2007 say
By the age of 3 children from disadvantaged backgrounds are up to 1 year behind
How does language effects cultural deprivation
-Less edcuated paretns tend to use language that only requires simple descriptive statements results in lower performance
-Feinstein 2008 said educated parent’s are more likely to use challenging language
-Bereiter and Engelmann 1966 says language used in lower class homes is deficient.
what are speech codes
Bernstein 1975- Speech is an important form of communication in education.
Restricted speech codes
-Short and grammatically simple and uses unfinished sentences. limited use of describing words
Elaborative speech codes
-Explicitly verbalises meaning, shows relationship between things and provides explanation in detail that can convey feeling through words
How are speech codes an advantage to the upper classes
-Elaborated code is language used by teachers, textbooks and exams
-It is seen by the public as the correct way to speak
-more effective for analysing, expressing and reasoning
However sociologists argue that it is not the pupils fault but its because they are culturally deprived but its because schools fails to teach them how to use elaborative speech code
