1 - Cells Flashcards
What are the 2 types of cells?
Prokaryotic or eukaryotic cells
What are eukaryotic cells?
Eukaryotic cells are complex and include all animal and plant cells.
What are prokaryotic cells?
Prokaryotic cell is a prokaryote - which is a single-celled organism. Also prokaryotic cells are smaller and simpler like bacteria.
What are the different parts of a cell called?
It is called a subcellular structure.
What is in an animal cell?
Nucleus Cytoplasm Cell membrane Mitochondria Ribosomes
Plant cells have everything an animal cell has but a few extra things that animal cells don’t have. Name them?
Cell wall
Vacuole
Chloroplasts
What does the nucleus do?
It contains genetic material that controls the activities of the cell.
What is cytoplasm?
Cytoplasm is a gel-like substance where most of the chemical reactions happen.
What is the cell membrane?
The cell membrane holds the cell together and controls what goes in and out.
What is the mitochondria?
The mitochondria is where most of the reactions for aerobic respiration take place.
What is a ribosome?
A ribosome is where proteins are made in the cell.
What is a cell wall?
A cell wall is made of cellulose and supports and strengthens the cell.
What is the vacuole?
The vacuole contains cell sap which is a weak solution of sugar and salts.
What are chloroplasts?
Chloroplast is where photosynthesis occurs - makes food for the plant. It contains chlorophyll - which absorbs the light needed for photosynthesis.
Name the structure of a bacterial cell - it is a prokaryote.
It doesn’t have a mitochondria or chloroplasts
It has cytoplasm, cell membrane and wall.
It doesn’t have a true nucleus - instead there is a single circular strand of DNA
It might contain small rings of DNA called plasmids
