1 Cell Structure Flashcards
Explain what a cell is.
A cell is the basic unit of all living organisms;
What is a cell surrounded by and what does it contain?
It is surrounded by a cell surface membrane and contains genetic material (DNA) and cytoplasm containing organelles.
State the fraction of a metre for millimetre.
1000th
State the fraction of a metre for micrometre.
1 millionth
State the fraction of a metre for a nanometre.
one thousand millionth (9 zeros)
What does ‘kilo’ mean?
1000 times
Outline the structure of a cell surface membrane.
a very thin membrane (about 7nm in diameter) surrounding all its cells
State the function of a cell surface membrane.
it is partially permeable and controls the exchange of materials between the cell and its environment
What can the cell surface membrane be referred to sometimes?
plasma membrane
Outline the structure of a nucleus.
It is a relatively large structure stained by chromatin. In the nucleus, there is a even more deeply stained area called the nucleolus.
What is the function of the nucleus?
Chromatin in the nucleus contains DNA, which contains instructions (genes) that control the activities of the cell.
(just cytoplasm)
Outline the structure of a cytoplasm.
A cytoplasm is the contents of a cell excluding the nucleus. It contains organelles which are surrounded by one or two membranes so that their activities can be separated from the surrounding cytoplasm.
