1(c) - Atomic Structure Flashcards
What is meant by the term atom?
An atom is the smallest part of an element.
What is meant by the term molecule?
A molecule is made of a fixed number of atoms covalently bonded together.
Describe the structure of an atom:
An atom consists of a central nucleus, composed of protons and neutrons. This is surrounded by electrons, orbiting in shells (energy levels). Atoms are neutral because the numbers of electrons and protons are equal.
What is the mass of protons, electrons and neutrons?
protons: 1
neutrons: 1
electrons: 1/1836
What is the atomic number?
The number of protons in an atom.
What is the mass number?
The number of protons and neutrons in an atom.
What is an isotope?
Atoms of the same element (same number of protons) but with a different number of neutrons.
What is the relative atomic number (Ar)?
The weighted average mass of the isotopes of the element, relative to the mass of 1/12th of a C-12 atom.
How do you calculate the relative atomic mass?
- Multiply the mass of each isotope by its relative abundance
- Add those together
- Divide by the sum of the relative abundances (normally 100)
