1 Bioenergetics 4 Flashcards
What type of reaction is respiration?
Cellular respiration is an exothermic reaction which is continuously occurring in living cells
(The energy transferred supplies all the energy needed for living processes)
What 2 types of respiration are there?
Aerobically (using oxygen)
Anaerobic (without oxygen)
Respiration trades place to transfer energy
What’s the equation for anaerobic respiration in plants & yeast?
Glucose ——-> ethanol + carbon dioxide
What’s the anaerobic respiration on yeast called?
Fermentation
What’s the economic value of fermentation?
It’s used to make bread and alcoholic drinks
- in bread-making the CO2 from fermentation makes the bread rise
- in beer & wine making fermentation produces alcohol,
Which produces more energy aerobic respiration or anaerobic?
Aerobic
Because in anaerobic the oxydation of glucose is incomplete so less energy is transferred
How does your body get rid of lactic acid after anaerobic respiration?
Blood flowing through the muscles transports lactic acid to the liver where it’s converted back into glucose
What’s oxygen debt?
Oxygen debt is the amount of extra oxygen the body needs after exercise to react with the accumulated lactic acid and remove it from the cells
