1 attention Flashcards
define change blindness
when there are changes in the env and we fail to observe it (e.g. slow changes)
define overt attention (vs?)
physically moving for preferential processing (vs covert attention, not observable)
what is the cocktail party effect
even when told to ignore stimuli, can recognise their own name & other conditioned stimuli
is the spotlight metaphor correct?
no e.g. when looking at targets on two objects after a cue on object A, faster on same object A than B. also can track multiple objects when they go behind pillars so we track objects
name 3 disorders of attention
- unilateral neglect
- Balint’s syndrome
- unilateral extinction
disorders of attention are associated with damage to
the right parietal lobe
neglect syndrome - what happens, associated with
- cannot pay attention to stimuli on left
- right parietal lobe and posterior parietal cortex
unilateral extinction - what happens
can recognise objects in isolation but when right and left presented together, cannot see left
Balint’s syndrome, cause and presentation
- bilateral parietal lobe damage
- cannot see two objects simultaneously
