A

Earth’s orbit is an eclipse, every 100,000 years ellipse shape changes. The angle of the tilt increases, which exaggerates climate

Fossil fuels are used in transportation, building, heating homes and manufacturing industry
Burnt in power stations to generate electricity

Produces large volumes of methane (cattle + microbes)
Demand for food increases = food production increases (more meat + crops)

How does deforestation impact climate change?

A

Trees photosynthesis, which takes away CO2 from the atmosphere, but trees being cut down mean that the word photosynthesis rate decreases

Why do we cut down trees?:

  • Clearing land for agriculture
  • Logging for wood and paper
  • Building roads to access remote areas
  • Making room for expansion of urban areas

How does climate change impact the world (in a general sense)?

A

Climate change increases + decreases temperature. Which,:
> Causes flooding / drought -> bad agriculture + places ruined - animals and humans both impacted
> Wildlife dying - marine and on land (due to change in quality of food for animals + lack of food supply for wildlife + loss of habitat (like ice caps melting))
> Health risks for humans - heat waves increased + waterborne diseases + skin cancer risk increased

What 2 approaches do we have to tackle climate change and what are they?

A

1) Mitigation: about strategies that deal with the cause of the problem - reduce or prevent greenhouse gases
2) Adaptation: responds to impacts of climate change and tries to make populations less vulnerable. Adaptation are local and not global

Alternative energy production:

  • Renewable energy sources provide a solution to reduce the volume of greenhouse gases contributing to climate change
  • Renewable energy is more expensive than fossil fuels, but are becoming cheaper and more competitive, as they don’t produce CO2
  • 14.9% of UK’s electricity generate by renewable energy sources (2013)

How does carbon capture help prevent climate change?

A

Carbon Capture:
- Capture carbon dioxide and safely store it in underground rock formations and the oceans
Done by turning CO2 into liquid (supercritical CO2) and injecting into sedimentary rock - impermeable ‘cap rock’ prevents it from escaping

  • Moving production to another location (change in temperature + extreme weather)
  • Increase irrigations in areas of changing precipitation
  • Change crops and varieties grown and time of year they are planted (bought resistant crops or livestock production)
  • UN Food and Agricultural Organisation say we need to be ‘climate smart’ to feed the world

  • Reduce demand for water: install water-efficient devices, like aerators
  • Increase supply of water: Thames Water opened a desalination plant in beckon in 2010 to increase water supply

How does reducing risk from rising sea levels help manage climate change?

A
  • London is currently protected against rising sea levels: Thames Barrier closed 100 times since 1982, when built, to stop tidal surges. Made for breached once every 1000 years, but 50 cm rise in sea level would increase to once every 100 years
