1-3 Macrophage and Dendritic Cell Subsets Flashcards
Antigen-presenting cells
Cells capable of displaying antigen for recognition by T cells and of activating naïve T cells. Dendritic cells are antigen-presenting cells.
Alveolar macrophages
Macrophages in the lungs.
Dermal dendritic cells
Immature dendritic cells resident in the dermal layer of the skin: they are the interstitial dendritic cells of skin.
Interstitial dendritic cells
Immature dendritic cells in the peripheral tissues, mucosa or dermal layers of the skin. Also know as tissue-resident dendritic cells.
Kupffer cells
Macrophages in the liver.
Langerhans cells
Immature dendritic cells in the epidermal layers of the skin.
Microglia
Prevalent type of macrophages in the brain, characterized by long processes.
Plasmacytoid dendritic cells
Cell type of the dendritic cell family that circulates in the blood, like plasma cells, and produces very large amounts of type 1 interferons upon contact with viruses.
Immature dendritic cells
Dendritic cells that have not come into contact with a pathogen.
