1 Flashcards
What is the primary function of the heart?
Pumps blood throughout the body
What are the three types of blood vessels?
- Arteries
- Veins
- Capillaries
What is the role of arteries in the cardiovascular system?
Carry oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the body
What is the function of veins?
Return deoxyginated blood to the heart
What do capillaries do?
Exchange oxygen and nutrients with tissues
What is the role of blood in the body?
Carries oxygen, nutrients, and removes waste
How do the lungs relate to the cardiovascular system?
Provide oxygen to the blood and remove carbon dioxide
What are the main functions of the cardiovascular system?
- Transporting oxygen and nutrients to cells
- Removing waste products
- Regulating body temperature
- Fighting infections
What is the function of the right atrium?
Receives de-oxyginated blood from the body and sends it to the right ventricle
What does the right ventricle do?
Pumps de-oxyginated blood to the lungs to get oxygen
What is the role of the left atrium?
Receives oxygen-rich blood from the lungs and sends it to the left ventricle
What is the function of the left ventricle?
Pumps oxygen-rich blood to the entire body
Describe the basic movement of blood through the heart
- Deoxygenated blood enters right atrium
- Blood enters right ventricle via tricuspid valve
- Blood exits right ventricle via pulmonary valve
- Blood goes to lungs via pulmonary arteries
- Oxygenated blood returns to left atrium via pulmonary veins
- Blood enters left ventricle via mitral valve
- Aorta distributes blood to body
What is Heart Rate (HR)?
The number of heartbeats per minute
What is Blood Pressure (BP)?
The force of blood pushing against the walls of blood vessels
