what is endotracheal intubation?
it is a procedure where a special tube with cuff at the end is inserted to the trachea
what equipment are needed for intubation?
et tube with cuff, laryngoscope, magill’s forceps, syringe, suction equipment, oral airway, lubrication for tube, stethoscope, mech vent/bvm, plaster
what are the nursing responsibilities for assisting intubation?
prepare the equipment, lubricate the tube, position the pt, maintain open airway, suction, secure the tube.
what to do after intubation?
check placement and secure/prevent displacement of tube by using plaster
what sizes are the et tube?
0-1 yrs old
1-3 yrs old
4-6 yrs old
6-10 yrs old

how do you check and secure the placement of et tube?
check placement by auscultation or observe expansion of chest and secure/prevent displacement of tube by using plaster
what position the pt is placed for intubation?
supine, with a 5cm block under the neck to allow extension of atlanto-occipital joint/allow flexion of neck
how long should the et insertion procedure?
less than 30 seconds
indications for intubation?
to secure airway, supply oxygen, for general anesthesia, CPR, ventilatory therapy in ICU
where do you connect et tube?
BVM, mech vent
