1-1 The Discovery of Cells Flashcards
In biology, the smallest unit that can perform all life processes; cells are covered by a membrane
Cell
A phospholipid layer that covers a cell’s surface; acts as a barrier between the inside of a cell and the cells’ enviorment
Cell Membrane
One of the small bodies in a cell’s cytoplasm that are specialized to perform a specific function
Organelle
In a Eukaryota cell, a membrane-bound organelle that contains the cell’s DNA and that has a role in processes such as growth, metabolism, and reproduction
Nucleus
An organism that consists of a single cell that does not have a nucleus
Prokaryote
An organism made up of cells that have a nucleus enclosed by a membrane; Eukaryotas include animals, plants, and fungi, but do not have archaebacteria or eubacteria
Eukaryote
Little animals
Animalcules
Two parts of this theory was written by Schwann
Cell Theory
The ratio of the cell’s volume - limits the cell’s size
surface area-to-volume ratio
The fluid in cells
Cytoplasm
The two types of Prokaryotic cells:
Eubacteria & Archaebacteria
Tiny, round organelles.
Ribosomes
A nickname for archaebateria
Archaea
Three types of archaebacteria
heat-loving, salt-loving, and methane-making
Lives in places where conditions are extreme
Extremophiles
