Passing Tones
• non-chord tone; fills space b/w 2 chord tones M2/m3/M3 apart.
NHT used to embellish a single tone that neighbors it on each side.
Neighboring Tone
NHT approached by leap, resolved by step in opposite direction
Appoggiatura
NHT approached by step resolve by leap in opposite direction
Escape Tone
NHT which resolves to the original chord tone.
Neighbor Group
aka Cambiata / Changing Tones
NHT which rhythmically anticipates a chord change that has not yet been reached.
Anticipation

- preparation (chord tone)
- suspension (same note as prep)
- resolution (always a chord tone)
Retardation
Same as a suspension but it resolves up instead of down
NHT that is a sustained tone occurring over 3+ chords
Pedal Point
NHT approached diatonically or chromatically by step and moves by step in the same direction
Passing Tones
NHT which can be found in strong and weak rhythmic positions

NHT Found on strong beats and/or have longer duration than surrounding tones

Double Passing Tone
one passing tone connecting to another passing tone, diatonically or chromatically, before moving in the same direction to a chord tone.
