the United States of Americaにtheがつく理屈
固有名詞で、普通名詞のstatesがあるから 厳密に言えば、 the states which are united という論理 これは、the Mississippi Riverにも同様の理屈が当てはまる。つまり、 the river named Mississippi という論理
Last night, I ate a chicken in the backyard.
の何が問題か？
aがつくと、一羽の鶏という意味になる。 鶏肉であれば、chicken 名詞に、aをつけるのではなく、本当は逆である。 単位性のあるものなら、 I ate a...a....a...hot dog! となるし、単位性がなければ I ate...uh...uh...meat! となる。不定冠詞は、名詞につくアクセサリーではない

における数えられるものと数えられないものの考え方
a songは、はじめと終わりを持つ歌うために作られた韻文という単位性を持つ
Loveは感情であり、単位性をもつか、形を持つかという点につき、意見の一致が見られない。
Love is flower-like/divine/heavenという人もいれば、Love is a sickness/a dizzinessという人もいる
一人の恋人と解釈して、a lost loveと解釈するという方法はある
a man walkedのaがなければ、人類そのものが歩くという意味になる
数えられないcornは、植物や、穂や、その粒などの総合的な意味を含めているので、決まった形のない、概念的な具象を表す言葉になっている。
つまり、aという言葉で、意味的カテゴリーをたててから、それに適切な名詞を探しているというのが、正しい理解
a+名詞と名詞とは、異なる単語であることを認めることがもっとも現実的

theがつくと、ある特定の具体的な国際的約定のことになる。

Problemは、困ること、issueは、課題。国際理解が足りないことは、Problemであるが、International understandingは、Problemではない。

の違いは？
a subjectであれば、話題の一つだが、the subjectになると注目の的となる

それぞれの名詞が、a, the, 無冠詞、単数、複数のどの意味的カテゴリーに入るかを、ひとつひとつ確かめながら、英文を読んでいくことが大切

tubeは、可算名詞。したがって、a tube, the tube, this tube, our tubeとなる
tubingは、純粋不可算名詞。管状のもの。

何が間違いか？
純粋可算名詞machineは、限定語のないまま裸ではでてこない。壊れたのが１台であれば、one of our machinesとなるし、何台壊れたか分からないくらい複雑であれば、the machinery or our manchineryと純粋不可算名詞を使う
