Assumptions of Kinetic Theory of Gases

A

Zero microscopic potential energy

  • Forces between particles are negligible

Energy is conserved

  • Collisions between particles and wall are elastic

Particles are treated as point masses

  • Gas is made up of large number of particles
  • Particles are in constant, random motion
  • Volume of each particle is negligible compared to volume of the gas
  • Duration of collisions is negligible compared with time interval between collisions
