09 Temperature & Ideal Gases Flashcards
1
Q
What is thermal equilibrium?
A
Situation in which there is no net exchange of energy when two objects are placed in thermal contact
2
Q
Ideal Gas equation
A
pV = nRT
pV = NkT
3
Q
Assumptions of Kinetic Theory of Gases
A
Zero microscopic potential energy
- Forces between particles are negligible
Energy is conserved
- Collisions between particles and wall are elastic
Particles are treated as point masses
- Gas is made up of large number of particles
- Particles are in constant, random motion
- Volume of each particle is negligible compared to volume of the gas
- Duration of collisions is negligible compared with time interval between collisions
4
Q
Kinetic Theory equation
A
pV = ⅓Nm〈c2〉
5
Q
Mean KE of one particle
A
〈Ek〉 = (3/2)kT
6
Q
KE of a gas
A
Ek = (3/2)NkT
Ek = (3/2)nRT
