08 Oscillations Flashcards
1
Q
What is meant by the term “resonance”?
A
- Resonance is the phenomenon in which there is a maximum transfer of energy from the driver to the oscillating system in a forced oscillation.
- It occurs when the driving frequency matches the natural frequency of the oscillating system.
- The oscillating system achieves maximum amplitude during resonance.
2
Q
Effect of increased damping on forced oscillations
A
At the resonance point: 1) When damping increases, amplitude decreases 2) driving frequency < natural frequency; the difference between driving & natural frequency increases as damping increases 3) driving frequency = natural frequency only for undamped oscillations
