Q

What is meant by the term “resonance”?

A
  1. Resonance is the phenomenon in which there is a maximum transfer of energy from the driver to the oscillating system in a forced oscillation.
  2. It occurs when the driving frequency matches the natural frequency of the oscillating system.
  3. The oscillating system achieves maximum amplitude during resonance.

Q

Effect of increased damping on forced oscillations

A

At the resonance point: 1) When damping increases, amplitude decreases 2) driving frequency < natural frequency; the difference between driving & natural frequency increases as damping increases 3) driving frequency = natural frequency only for undamped oscillations
