09 Male Reproductive System Flashcards
Androgen
hormone that stimulates development of male secondary sex characteristics, such as beard growth and deepening of voice (testosterone)
Produced in testes, adrenal glands
Aspermia
failure in male sperm cells production as well as ejaculation of semen (fluid and sperm cells)
Azoospermia
lack of spermatozoa in the semen (testicular dysfunction, chemo blockage, vasectomy)
BPH
Benign prostatic hypertrophy or hyperplasia
Cryogenic
use of extremely cold temperatures to freeze or destroy tissue
Cryptorchidism
one or both testes fail to descend from the abdomen in the scrotal sac near the time of birth
Epididymitis
inflammation of the epididymis (fever, chills, pain in groin, tender, swollen epididymis)
Gonorrhea
STD transmitted infection involving inflammation of the genital tract mucous membranes and caused by gonococci bacteria (berry-shaped bacteria)
Hydrocele
sac of clear fluid within the scrotum
hernia within the scrotum
Oligospermia
scanty sperm count
Orchiectomy
removal of testis= castration
Orchiopexy
surgical fixation of an undescended testis
(Cryptorchism) in the scrotum
Prostatectomy
removal of prostate gland
Prostatic hyperplasia
increased growth of the prostate gland in numbers of cells
Prostatitis
inflammation of the prostate gland
Seminal Vesicle
one of a pair of sac like male exocrine glands lying behind the urinary bladder and opening into the vas deferens
it secretes fluid that is the major part of semen
Spermatozoa
sperm cells
Teratoma
a benign tumor occurring in the testes composed of different type of tissue, such as bone, hair cartilage and skin cells
Testis
male gonad that produces spermatozoa (sperm cells) and the hormone testosterone
testosterone
male hormone secreted by the interstitial cells of the testes, responsible for male characteristics
TURP
thru the urethra
removal of prostate
transurethral prostectomy
Varicocele
enlarged, dilated veins near a testicle, associated with oligospermia and azoospermia
Vas Deferens
narrow tube that carries sperm from the epididymis into the body, around the urinary bladder toward the urethra
Vasectomy
removal of a piece of each vas deferens and tying off each end
vasovasostomy
a new opening in the end of a severed vas deferens
reversal of a vasectomy
