05. Connective Tissue Flashcards
Loose connective
very loose and irregular; forms the bed for other tissues such as the skin
Dense connective
characterized by densely packed fibers of collagen or elastic
Elastin
protein giving elastic properties to tissue
Collagen
Collagen is one of the long, fibrous structural proteins whose functions are a major component of the extracellular matrix that supports most tissues and gives cells structure from the outside
Tendon
dense connective tissue connecting muscles to bone or cartilage
Aponeurosis
flat sheet of connective tissue forming attachment to muscles
Ligament
dense connective tissue connecting bone to bone or cartilage to cartilage
Fascia
dense connective tissue surrounding organs or muscles
Reticular connective tissue
The fibers form a soft skeleton (stroma) to support the lymphoid organs (lymph nodes, red bone marrow, and spleen)
Special Dense Connective
Composed of cells (chondroblasts ) located in spaces called lacunae. Surrounding the lacunae are ground matrix and fibers. Cartilage and bone.
Cartilage
stiff yet flexible connective tissue found in many areas in the bodies of humans and other animals, including the joints between bones, the rib cage, the ear, the nose, the bronchial tubes and the intervertebral discs.
Chondroblasts
cell that is responsible for cartilage formation
Hyaline cartilage
bluish white in appearance. Covers the ends of bones and provides smooth articulation for joints.
Elastic cartilage
More elastic fibers make this yellowish in appearance. More flexible, found in ear, nose
Fibrocartilage
stiff yet flexible cartilage made up of collagen and elastin that provides strong cushion such as between vertebral bodies.
