04 - maintaining anesthesia Flashcards
1
Q
(maintaining anesthesia)
- inhalant anesthesia can be used following induction of anesthesia with IV agents
- likely to be used for procedures longer than 1 hour in duration
- cardiac output reduced by up to 50% of baseline values when inhalant anesthetic agents are used
- all inhalants cause mild hypercarbia (^CO2 in blood) and resp depression

Q
(maintaining anesthesia)
- horse has poorly lobulated lungs and a long, sloping diaphragm
- makes large portion of lung vulnerable to compression by bulky intestinal tract when in any position other than standing
- vetinlation-perfusion mismatch is common in horse under anesthesia
- if kept standing lung fxn remains normal

Q
(maintaining anesthesia)
(inhalant anesthetics)
- include halothane, isoflurane, sevoflurane
- why isn’t nitrous oxide used much in horse?
A
- potency less in horses and arterial hypoxemia and diffusion hypoxia limit usefullness
