What is the Eighty Years War (Techtigjarige Oorlog)?
1568 - 1648.
It was a war between the Netherlands and Spain. It ended with Dutch Independence (treaty of Munster). Led to the formation of the Dutch Republic
What is the Dutch Golden Age (Gouden Eeuw)
17th Century.
It was a period of economic growth, trade, and art. It’s when the Dutch became the world leader in trade, science, and the navy. Famous painters during this time are Rembrandt and Vermeer. It’s when the Dutch East India Company (VOC) was a major “trading” company.

1940 - 1945
Tweede Wereldoorlog.
The Netherlands was occupied by Nazi Germany from 1940 to 1945.
What is the significance does May 5th 1945 have?
It’s bevrijdingsdag. It’s when the Netherlands was liberated from Germany occupation.
What significance does May 4th have?
It’s the national moment of silence for remembrance Day (Dodenherdenking).
It’s from 8pm and you observe two minutes of silence. It’s to honor all dutch victims of war. The main ceremony takes place at Dam Square in Ams.
What is the flood disaster of 1953?

It’s when a huge flood hit the netherlands, especially Zeeland, killing 1,800+ people. This led to the Delta Works (Deltrawerken), a system of flood defenses.
What is the EU and Social Changes in recent history?
The Netherlands is a founding member of the EU in 1957. It introduced the euro in 2002. It has progressive policies for LGBTQ+, Euthanasia, Legalized soft drugs

Colonies in Indonesia, Suriname, and Carribean. Indonesia gained independence in 1949 after a war, and suriname became independent in 1975. - Slavery (Slavernijverleden)
Involved in the slave trade (17th-19th Century).
Dutch abolished slavery in 1863 in Suriname and the Dutch Carribean. Keti Koti on July 1st celebrates the end of slavery.
