What is the family doctor?
The huisarts is a general practitioner. If you are sick, you go to the huisarts, not the hospital. You must register with a huisarts in the neighborhood. If you need specialist care, the huisarts gives a referral (verwijzing) to a hospital (ziekenhuis) or specialist
How can you make an appointment with the huisarts?
Call in the morning, or online book. If urgent, the assistant (Doktersassistent) will try to give you a same-day appointment.
What if you need help outside of work hours?
Call the huisartsenpost (after hours medical care), which is the GP emergency service.
How do the pharmacies work?
The apotheek provides prescription medicine. The huisarts sends your prescription digitally to the pharmacy. You must register at one pharmacy so they can keep track of your medications.
Whats the difference between an Apotheek and a Drogist?
An apotheek only deals in prescription medications. A drogist is a non-prescription medicine.
How do dentists work?
You must register with a tandarts in your area. Dental care is usually not included in basic health insurance.
When should you see a dentist?
You should have regular checkups every 6 months. You must make an appointment in advance. Emergency dental care is available at dental emergency clinics (tandartsen spoeddienst)
Who do you call if you have tooth pain?
Tandarts, not the huisarts.
How does health insurance work in the Netherlands?
Its mandatory to have basic Dutch health insurance, you must choose the company yourself.
What does basic health insurance cover?
Hospital care, huisarts visits and medicine. Dental care, glasses and physio is not covered.
What is eigen risico?
Deductible amount, which is when you must pay the first 385 per year for some medical costs. This doesn’t apply to huisarts visits or maternity care.
Who do you go to for checkups if you’re pregnant?
The midwife (verloskundige), not the huisarts, for checkups
What must you register with before giving birth?
You must register with a kraamzorg (maternity care service) before giving birth.
