What are the signs of oculomotor palsy?
Fixed dilated pupil
Ptosis
Down and out deviation of eye
What is the management of status epilepticus?
When a seizure has been ongoing for >5mins IV lorazepam (in hospital setting) followed by a second dose 10-20mins later if it did not work
Followed by phenytoin if this does not work
If phenytoin does not work then GA is used
What are signs of essential tremor?
Postural tremor- worse when arms are outstretched
Improved by alcohol and rest
What is prophylactic medication for migraines?
Topiramate (teratogenic) or propanolol
How can trigeminal nerve lesions present?
Trigeminal neuralgia Loss of corneal reflex Loss of facial sensation Paralysis of muscles of mastication Deviation of jaw to weak side
What are symptoms of brain abscess?
Headache Fever Focal neurology Seizures Papilloedema Nausea
What are signs of degenerative cervical myelopathy?
Pain affecting neck, upper/lower limbs
Loss of motor function- especially fine motor function
Loss of sensory function causing numbness
Loss of autonomic function causing faecal or urinary incontinence
What are signs of vestibular schwanoma or acoustic neuroma?
Loss of corneal reflex Facial palsy Vertigo Unilateral hearing loss Unilateral tinnitus
