031 Principles of Metabolic Regulation Flashcards
What is the most common type of covalent modification and which enzyme does it use?
Phosphorylation by kinases
Which enzymes catalyze dephosphorylation?
Phosphoprotein phosphatases
What is allosteric control?
The reversible, non-covalent binding of effectors to enzymes resulting in activation or inhibition. This can happen within seconds.
How do allosteric effectors worked?
By stabilising effect between the tense and rest state.
What are conserved metabolites?
When substrates are just being recycled around e.g. ATP but the total concentration of both forms is unchanged.
What are secondary messengers within the cell?
They amplify the effect of hormone binding, so a small quantity is required.
