03 - Safety and Your Vehicle Flashcards
What causes uneven tyres?
Faults in the braking system, suspension or tracking
What is the problem with uneven tyres?
If the front wheel is unbalanced, they could make the steering vibrate
When should you check tyre pressures?
Once a week, when the tyres are cold
What is the problem with under-inflated tyres? (3)
Makes the steering feel heavy
Increases fuel consumption
Increases your stopping distance
What is the problem with low brake fluid?
Air may enter the system and the brakes won’t work properly
When are oil and coolant levels particularly important to check?
Before long journeys
What should you check with your windscreen?
That it’s free of chips and cracks
What should you check with the battery?
If it needs topping up with distilled water (unless it’s a maintenance-free battery)
What must the tread on car and trailer wheels be
At least 1.6mm deep across the central three-quarters of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire circumference
What is dry steering?
When you turn the steering wheel while the car isn’t moving. It can cause wear to the tyres and steering mechanism
How can you check the condition of the shock absorbers
Bounce the vehicle by pushing down hard over each wheel: there should be no more than one rebound when released
When should the ABS (anti-lock braking system) warning light go out?
When the car’s travelling at 5-10 mph
What is brake-fade?
When the brakes become less effective because of overheating
When should you visit a garage ASAP?
When the steering vibrates (tyres need balancing)
The vehicle pulls to one side when you brake (brakes need adjusting)
Who MUST wear a seatbelt?
Adults 14 and over, and children over 1.35 metres
