16
Q

Define the Action Hero.

A

Is strong but not always silent.
He is often angry and above all he is aggressive in the extreme and engages in violent behaviour.
Violence is justified often by it being ‘for the greater good’.

17
Q

Define the Big Shot.

A

He is defined by his professional status.
He is the epitome of success embodying the characteristics and acquiring the possessions that society deems valuable.
This stereotype suggests that a real man must be economically powerful and socially successful.

18
Q

Define the Strong Silent Type.

A

Focuses on being in charge, containing emotion and succeeding with women.
Gains power through deeds rather than force.
This stereotype reinforces the assumption that men and boys should always be in control and talking about ones feelings is a sign of weakness.

19
Q

Define the Metrosexual.

A

A more feminine approach to masculinity, concerned with appearance.
This generally means: Smooth features, styled hair, use of cosmetics and hair care products, cares about clothes.
Sometimes turned into a sex object - sexualised and objectified.

20
Q

Define the Jock.

A

Physically fit and defined by sporting prowess.
Highly competitive and aggressive (but not necessarily violent)
He must fight other men when necessary and avoid being soft.
By demonstrating his power and strength the jock wants to win approval of other men and the adoration of women.

21
Q

Define the Joker.

A

A very popular character with boys/men
Can be shown as an moderate achiever but not a hard-worker.
Often portrayed as the friend rather than the leading man
A potential negative consequence of this stereotype is the assumption that boys and men should not be serious or emotional.

22
Q

Define the Buffoon.

A

Similar to the joker, however they are the joke (rather than making the joke)
Commonly appears as a bungling father figure in TV ads and sitcoms.
Usually well-intentioned and light-hearted, these characters range from slightly inept to completely hopeless when it comes to parenting their children or dealing with domestic (or workplace)issues.
However, they still end up in a winning position e.g. they still get the girl
