What is Representation?
Representation is the way in which the media constructs aspects of ‘real life’ including people, places, events, culture, ethnicity and issues.
The media don’t just present reality, they re-present it.
What is Reality?
Understanding the meaning of reality is key in order to understand representation.
Real things are those things that you experience without any form of media in between.
Everything you see in the media is NOT REALITY.

What is mediation?
Mediation is when we view the world through the media it has gone through a process of construction and selection before the audience can consume it.
What are first hand experiences?
Those that you have with reality. These can also be referred to as primary research, or primary sources, for example, conducting an interview with an individual.
What are second hand experiences?
Those which have been mediated. These can also be referred to as secondary research or secondary sources for example, watching an interview on television, reading an interview in a magazine, listening to an interview on the radio.
Experiences that you have with reality are what type of experiences?

Political Ideologies - Left Wing, Right Wing (Conservative, Labour, Liberal, Greens, Ukip).
Religious Ideologies - Christian (Catholic / Protestant / Methodist / Evangelical), Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Shinto, Buddhist, Humanist etc. etc.
Socio-economic Ideologies – Working class, middle class, upper-middle class, upper class, celebrity class
Gender Ideologies – Feminist, Patriarchal, Hetro-Normativity
