03 Exchange of Respiratory Gases Flashcards
1
Q
Breathing
A
- Physical process of moving air into and out of the body
- Involves inhalation and exhalation
- Allows respiration to take place
2
Q
External Respiration
A
- In lungs
- Oxygen goes from the alveoli to the capillaries and Carbon Dioxide goes from the capillaries to the alveoli
3
Q
Internal Respiration
A
- In body tissues
- Oxygen goes from the capillary to the body cell and Carbon Dioxide goes from the body cell to the capillary
4
Q
Cellular Respiration
A
- Within cell
- Allows cell to get energy out of glucose by using oxygen gas to break the bonds
- Results in creation of carbon dioxide as a waste product
5
Q
How to transport oxygen in the blood?
A
- Oxygen attaches itself to the hemoglobin in the red blood cells
- Carbon dioxide can also do this but mostly dissolves into plasma in blood
- Changes pH of the blood making it more acidic
- Chemoreceptors in body monitor the pH, when it gets too low it sends a message to the brainstem, which sends a message to the ribs and diaphragm which causes you to breathe
- When breathing you remove carbon dioxide from blood and so the blood pH returns to normal
