03. Evolution and Diversity of Organisms [DEFINITIONS] Flashcards
Classification
The arrangement of organisms into groups on the basis of common characteristics is called classification.
Taxonomy
Taxonomy is the scientific study on classification, identification, nomenclature and description which includes placing groups of organisms in a hierarchical sequence.
Artificial Classification
Artificial classification is the grouping based on a few pre selected unifying characters.
Natural Classification
Natural classification is the grouping based on true relationships.
Taxon
The taxonomic unit at any level/rank of the hierarchy is called a taxon.
Species
A species is a group of organisms who share similar characteristics and have the ability to interbreed and produce viable and fertile offspring.
Morphological Species Concept
Use of morphological criteria to distinguish species such as body shape and other structural features.
Ecological Species Concept
Defines species in terms of its ecological niche and the sum of how members of the species interact with the non-living and living components of their environment
Phylogenetic Species Concept
Defines species as the smallest group of individuals that share a common ancestor.
Non-vascular Plants / Bryophytes
Plants that do not have an extensive transport system are non-vascular plants
