What is the primary purpose of AXR?
A
Diagnose obstruction - Obstruction likely if dilated bowel pre-obstruction, and no gas post-obstruction.

What imaging would you use on RUQ pain?
A
CXR - air under hemidiaphragm.
Ultrasound - look for stones etc.

What imaging would you use on suspected renal colic?
A
CT urography (ultrasound if woman of child-bearing age) AXR to find location of stone.

What imaging would you use on acute RIF pain?
A
TA US (appendix) - TV if may be ovarian/fallopian. CT if normal appendix not visualised

What imaging would you use on a suspected bowel obstruction?
A
AXR. Maximum Physiological dimensions are 1 - Caecum - 10cm 2 - Transerse Colon - 7cm 3 - Duodenum/Jejunum - 3.5cm 4 - Ileum - 2.5cm

A
US (TA/TV for FoCA)
CT

What imaging would you use for generalised pain?
A
If unsure of cause - Pancreatitis? Perforation?
Erect CXR, followed by AXR.
CT
If unstable, US and CT.
