1
Q
What are the pathological changes associated with liver disease?
A
Generally similar changes regardless of the insult. Hepatocyte swelling (hydropic change) - defects in membrane/mitochondrial function Steatosis (fatty change) - accumulation of fat and TAGs in hepatocytes
2
Q
Identify three ways that liver cell death can manifest histologically.
A
Lytic - Cell swelling
Coagulative necrosis - dark red staining cells
Apoptosis - single cell death
3
Q
How does the liver respond to ongoing injury (histologically)
A
Hepatocyte proliferation (replace dead cells) Hepatocyte hypertrophy (englarement of organelles) Bile ductular proliferation (loss of integrity of bile passages)
4
Q
What are the three subtypes of liver disease?
A
Hepatic parenchymal disease
Hepatobiliary disorders
Hepatic vascular disorder.
