012915 endocrine histo Flashcards
key components of generic endocrine gland
parenchyma has endocrine secretory cells and capillary plexi
pituitary gland is composed of what kind of tissues
fibrous portion (neural lobe) and cellular portion (anterior)
what do anterior pituitary cells look like?
on H and E, some stain darker and some stain lighter
what do posterior pituitary cells look like?
has glial like cells
end terminals of neurons
capillary plexi
what does thyroid gland look like?
lots of follicles with secretory cells on their border. capillaries surrounding follicles. also contains parafollicular cells.
follicles are filled with fluid that contains thyroglobulin (the storage form). follicular epithelial cells make thyroglobulin and put it in the follicle to store. follicular epithelial cells also release T3 and T4 into the blood
what do parafollicular cells look like?
slightly bigger, pink cytoplasm
how to differentiate btwn an active thyroid gland and inactive?
active one–the thyroid follicles will be smaller b/c not storing as much. also, the follicle epithelial cells will be taller, and also, there will be white spaces bordering the follicle.
what does parathyroid gland look like?
adipose tissue
principle/chief cells (secretory cells)
oxiphil cells (acidophilic-pink)
capillaries
adrenal cortex composition
from capsule inward: zona glomerulosa (secretory cells in clusters or balls) zona fasciculata (in columns) zona reticularis (network of cords)
what’s made in zona glomerulosa of adrenal gland
mineralcorticoids
what’s made in zona fasciculata of adrenal gland
corticosteroids
what’s made in the zona reticularis of adrenal gland
small amounts of estrogen, progesterone
what do neurons synapse onto in the adrenal medulla
chromomedullary cells
endocrine pancreas consists of
islets of Langerhans with rich capillary plexus
