006 Emerging Technologies in Plant Production Flashcards

1
Q

Describe the micro-propagation technology

A

This technology and practice uses extremely small pieces of plant tissue taken from a carefully chosen and prepared mother plant, to grow under laboratory conditions to produce new plants. They can grow a bunch in a small amount of time with this technique.

Q

Describe biotechnology

A

A range of tools, including traditional techniques, that alter living organisms, part of an organism, to make or modify products; improve plants or animals: or develop microorganisms for specific agriculture used. Modern biotechnology includes the tools of genetic engineering. They allows production at a cheaper cost and more manageable rate.

Q

Describe genetic engineering

A

Changes the way a plant grows, or making it resistant to a particular diseased by adding a specific stretch of DNA into the plant’s genome. This allows us to add nutrients, grow with less pesticides, usually cheaper.

Q

Describe the remote sensing technique and technology

A

Use of satellite images that take photos of a field over time so that the grower can analyze conditions based on the data (mapping soil properties, classification of crop species or detection of crop water stress)

Q

Describe Precision Farming

A

farming strategy based on observing, measuring and responding to inter- and intra-field variability in crops. It is the idea of using new technology to improve crop yields and assist in management decisions using high technology sensor and analysis tools. Precision farming us to increase production and decrease labor time.

Q

What is Variable Rate Technology (VRT)?

A

Uses data and automation to apply fertilizer, crop protection products, seeds and even irrigation water at different rates in different locations w/out a grower having to change the application rates or make multiple passes manually.

It works by using GPS and GIS technology to locate precise locations in the field for material application

Q

What is Geographic Information System (GIS)?

A

tool that creates visual representations of data and performs spatial analyses in order to make informed decisions. Combines hardware, software and data.

Q

What is Global Positioning System (GPS)?

A

Collects data and field boundaries. Accuracy of these maps of boundaries, roads, irrigation systems and problem areas allow farmers to find/navigate to these specific locations.
