How does the Singapore Zoo’s exploit animals?
A
- In 2005, Singapore’s Animal Concerns Research Society raised objections against “animals performing circus-style tricks” at the SIngapore Zoo and Night Safari. However, it was not till 2018 that the Singapore Zoo stopped featuring elephant shows that showcased elephants balancing on logs and performing other tricks for the audience

- After years of decline, wild panda numbers are finally rebounding due to captive breeding programmes which increased mating opportunities and the survival rate of cubs, enabling its population to grow by 17% over the past decade

- In August 2021, two giant pandas, Kai Kai and Jia Jia successfully reproduced a male panda cub at the River Safari through artificial insemination

- As part of the European Endangered Species Program (EEP) in 2018, a zoo in Turin, Northern Italy, received 18 African Penguins. Italian scientists who wanted to study the vocal repertoire of the endangered African Penguins were able to do so conveniently because of the captive colony in the zoo

What are the health problems of captive animals?

- According to National Geographic, nearly 80% of zoo animals suffer from zoochosis. Its symptoms include self-mutilation, repetitive actions, and swaying from side to side
