Zimbardo's Study Flashcards
What does Social Roles mean?
Parts that people play as a member of various social groups.
-accompanied with expectations
-appropriate behaviour is followed
We internalise these expectations which then shape our behaviour.
What was the overall procedure?
-Done in the basement of Stanford University which was converted into a mock prison.
-Had 24 male American students who were made sure to be ‘emotionally stable’ by a psycological test.
-Zimbardo acted as a super intendant.
What was the procedure like for the prisoners?
-Arrested from there homes and taken in a police car
-searched,deloused and dressed in smock uniforms
-referred to as numbers
What was the procedure like for the guards?
-given uniforms,’night sticks’ and mirrored glasses.
-told to keep prisoners under control but not to use physical violance.
What did the uniforms do for the guard?
created a loss of personal identity.
Overall what was Zimbardo’s findings?
-Everyone comformed to there social roles.
-some prisoners were released early as they showed psycological disturbance.
-study intended to last two weeks but instead lasted 6 days
What did Zimbardo find about the prisoners?
-Within a day they rebelled by ripping there numbers.
-Identification,as they began to refer to each other as numbers and also themselves.
-rapidly subdues and became depressed.
What did Zimbardo find about the guards?
-Guards responded by locking the prisoners up and confiscating there blankets
-punishments by the guards escalated.
What was the conclusion that Zimbardo came to?
Social roles have extraordinary power over individuals they make the most well adjusted capable of extreme brutality.
What are Ethical Guidlines?
Rules that must be followed by the researcher to respect and protect the participants.
What are Ethical issues?
Where psycologists need to have ethical consideration before carrying out research to avoid breaking guidlines where possible.
Name all 5 ethical issues.
-CONSENT
-DECEPTION
-CONFIDENTIALITY
-WITHDRAWAL
-PROTECTION
which of the 5 ethical issues did Zimbardo break and say how.
CONSENT-didnt fully inform what was going to happen e.g arrested from home, taken in police car
WITHDRAWAL-As the researcher zimbardo should’ve allowed participants to leave but as the superintendent he denied that.
PROTECTION-3 participants left due to psycological disturbance.
What did Zimbardo Provide after and what did he find?
He provided Debreifing sessions and found that there was no negative long lasting effect.
Explain the strength of Zimbardo’s study having a high extranuous variables.
For examples Zimbardo selected emotionally stable male volunteers and also randomly put them in the group of a guards or prisoners.
>so therefore if they did comform it would be by chance and the role itself would have influenced the behaviour.
