Comformity Flashcards
What is conformity?
Changes in individuals behaviour and/or beliefs because of real or imagined group pressure.
What are 3 forms of conformity?
-compliance
-identification
-internalisation
Describe when one Is compliant
The most superficial and least permanent.Individual publicaly changes behaviour and beliefs. In private they would revert back. They do not agree with what the group is doing.
What is identification?
Involves possibly private or public acceptance. There is a membership which is desirable towards the individual therefore they would adjust there behaviour and beliefs.Once the group is no longer seen as valuable they possibly revert back.
What is internalisation?
The deepest most permanent one.Individual publicaly and privately changes behaviour and belief system. It is accepted in to there own cognition. It last even though the group is no longer present.
What is Informational social Influence (ISI)?
The individual has a desire to be right therefore seek information from the group. It is a cognitive process and leads to internalisation.
What is Normative social influence (NSI)?
The individual has a desire to be liked therefore go along with group behaviour to avoid ridicule. This is a emotional process which leads to compliance.
What is the main difference between the two theories?
NSI-publicaly change there view and revert privately to original view.
ISI-Publicaly and privately change view to be in line with the group.
What kind of theories are these and who developed these?
It is a two process theory developed by Deutsch and Gerard
Explain Asch’s Research.
-Group would be 7-9
-participant would be in the middle
-told to match standard line to comparison line
-confederates would purposefully get it wrong
-task was unambiguious
What were the findings of Asch’s research?
37% of the time participant would comform with confederates.
What can be concluded by Asch’s research?
it supports NSI as the individual conformed publicaly but not privately and they did this to be accepted by the group.
What did Neto (1995) say about women which weakens the researchs external validity?
More women are conformist as they care more about social relationships and to be liked by peers.NSI is only a explanation for certain group(females).
Why is the research not reliable?
It has a gender bias which weakens the researches external validity.
1995 Neto.Cant be generalised.
What are the 3 variables which affect conformity?
-Group size
-Unanimity
-Task difficulty
