Zimbardo Flashcards
Why did Zimbardo choose a mock prison environment
It is the main socially stressful place where a persons rights can be taken away
Who were the participants
A group of 24 young and mentally stable males
Why were the roles of the participants randomly allocated
To give each participant an equal chance of getting either role and to exterminate any possible extraneous variables
What is the I.V and the D.V
I.V was the status and power the guards had
D.V was the attitude of the prisoners
Write a hypothesis
It is hypothesised that the males that were given the power and position of the guards will tend to dominate the prisoners thus influencing the compliance of the youths that were given the role of prisoner.
Why were they dressed in sacks?
It was to take away any form of identification and liberty
Why were the gaurds given proper uniforms and night sticks
To make the guards transform into a more superior frame of mind and to give them a more intimidating and dominating approach
What was the primary role of the guards and how was this achieved
Their main goal was to dominate the prisoners and to maintain order. This was achieved by: harassing the prisoners Harsher punishments Turning the prisoners against each other
What distressed the prisoners the most
The loss of rights
What is the conclusion of the experiment
The more power some one is given the more they try to dominate people of a weaker status or power
Were there any ethical considerations?
The right of voluntary withdrawal- was breached even though the prisoners begged to leave the experiment they were persuaded to continue on
Debreif- the participants of the experiment were not offered any help after the experiment was over
What is the aim
