Obedience Flashcards
What is the link between social power and obedience?
People usually obey people with a higher level of social status.
Pig slaves obey the Daleks as they have higher status and are seen as superior
What was the aim of the Milgram experiment?
To investigate wether individuals would obey an authority figure who was ordering them to inflict pain on other people
Who were the participants
40 males 20-50 years of variation of background this helped generalise the results
How were the participants recruited and what is this called
The participants were recruited by an ad in the newspaper this is called convenient sample
What was the I.V and the D.V
The I.V was the intensity of the Voltage
The D.V was the obedience and the Withdrawal of the Teacher
Write a hypothesis
It is hypothesised that adults who are given an instruction by some one who is perceived as a person of higher authority to inflict pain on someone else by delivering an electric shock will refuse to obey when the electrical shock reaches an unacceptable level or a fatal amount
What were the results
65% of the participants did not withdraw when the voltage reached its maximum voltage 5 people refused to deliver the fatal dosage
What were the ethical considerations
Voluntary withdrawal: the participants were told to continue with the experiment even when they protested against it
Deception: the participants were not told that in reality there was no voltage being delivered to the person
How would Milgram debrief the participants
He would let the participants know that there was no actual voltage and that the “student” wad in fact a confederate. The experiment was really based on how likely a person is to obey a person perceived as higher authority
How was cognitive dissonance displayed
The participants knew that what they were being asked to do was wrong moral wise but they still continued to give the voltage
What is obedience
A type of compliance when an individual follows a demand rather than a request it is submissive compliance
