zero to finals conditions Flashcards
what is otosclerosis
fixation of bones in the middle ear leading to conductive hearing loss
what type of pitch does otosclerosis effect
lower pitched sounds
most common bacteria associated with otitis media
strep.pneumonia
pathophysiology of BPPV
calcium in the semi-circular canals. The crystals effect the flow of endolymph and head movements cause movement of it and causes vertigo
what is vestibular neuronitis
inflammation of vestibular nerve
do you get hearing loss with vestibular neuronitis
no just vertigo
what is labyrinthitis
Labyrinthitis refers to inflammation of the bony labyrinth of the inner ear, including the semicircular canals, vestibule (middle section) and cochlea. The inflammation is usually attributed to a viral upper respiratory tract infection.
symptoms of labyrinthitis
vertigo, hearing loss and tinnitus
what is menieres disease
effects the inner ear due to impairment of endolymph absorption
Ménière’s disease triad
Vertigo, Sensioneural hearing loss, tinnitus
what is quinsy
Quinsy is the common name for a peritonsillar abscess. Arises when there is trapped pus caused by a bacterial infection causing an abscess
what bacteria causes quinsy
strep.pyogenes (group A strep)
management of quinsy
Surgical drain to remove pus
steriods to reduce inflammation
what bacterial causes bacterial tonsilitis
group A strep treated with penicillin V
how do you determine if tonsilitis is bacterial
centor score- more than 3 suggests bacteria
Fever over 38ºC
Tonsillar exudates
Absence of cough
Tender anterior cervical lymph nodes (lymphadenopathy)
what is leukoplakia
white patches in the mouth
what is erythoplakia
red patches in the mouth
what is gingivitis
inflammation of the gums
what is glossitis
inflammation of the tongue. papillae shrink
what causes glossitis
iron deficiency, B12 deficiency, coeliac disease
causes of strawberry tongue
scarlet fever
what is cholesteatoma
Cholesteatoma is an abnormal collection of squamous epithelial cells in the middle ear.
what causes cholesteatoma
The main theory is that negative pressure in the middle ear, caused by Eustachian tube dysfunction,
presentation of cholesteatoma
foul smelling discharge out of ear, unilateral conductive hearing loss
