Zakah
Purification of wealth, by giving 2.5% of savings (Nisaab) each year to the poor.
Sadaqah
Good actions or voluntary payments that are undertaken for charitable reasons
Khums
A 20% tax paid by Shi’a Muslims on their excess income
Why/when do Muslims observe zakah?
Obligation-one of the pillars
Giving alms
2.5% giving of their savings usually given at the end of Ramadan

” whatever you give… God is well aware of whatever good you do”
Who is the money given to and how is it collected?
Donated directly to a charity.
Collected by a mosque which will distribute it to those in need.
Encouged to donate voluntarily= sadaqah
Alms quote
“alms are meant only for the poor, the needy”
How do Sunni and Shi’a beliefs differ?
Sunni & Shi’a = zakah
Shi’a= khums. Mean fifth. Give 20% of savings/excess income
“Whatever you acquire, a fifth of it is for allah”
Different reasons why zakah is significant
- fulfilling a duty imposed by god
- freeing oneself from greed- purifying
- protecting society
- creates a fairer society
- prayers should make Muslims more concerned for others- zakah puts this concern into action
