serious consequence of climate change on Pacific nations is rising sea temperature - National Geographic states that the ocean has suffered from a 0.1 degree Celsius rise in sea temperatures over the last century; this affects sea life because “marine ecosystems are far more sensitive” - has bleached (killed) many coral reefs in the Pacific islands and made many areas inhabitable for sea life. - fewer tourists will come because a main attraction is the coral reefs; this means less money in the economy - fishing industry will decline as there are less fish available - economic problems have social affects - there will be fewer jobs for people and they might end up not being able to provide food, water and shelter for their families.

Another serious threat to pacific nations is the changing weather systems - US environmental agency, “Scientific studies indicate that extreme weather events such as heat waves and large storms are likely to become more frequent or more intense with … climate change” - In 2015, Vanuatu experienced the most severe tropical cyclone ever recorded, cyclone Pam - devastated Vanuatu’s infrastructure - damaging about 90% of the nation’s buildings, stopping economic productivity nationwide - were thousands of homes, schools and hospitals were destroyed as well as having no drinkable water - Cyclone Pam was the worst cyclone to hit any of the pacific islands and it was caused by climate change affecting the weather systems

However, the worst threat facing the Pacific islands is rising sea levels. - National Geographic, “sea levels rise 3.5mm per year.” Increased sea levels are a direct consequence of climate change warming up the globe and causing ice bergs to melt - . In 1999 the Kiribati islands of Tebua Tarawa and Abanuea both sunk under the rising sea level - Political affects were inhabitats became refugees - Other pacific nations such as Tuvalu are gradually being flooded with sea water; the salty water is then killing off coconut trees and destroying a vital part of their economy - The rising sea levels are causing the most devastating effects on the pacific nations, destroying the islands politically, economically and environmentally
