Yr6 - S3 - Earths Surface Flashcards
Picture a Strike-slip vault.
Picture a Thrust Fault.
Picture a normal Fault.
What is a fault line?
Its the line where two tectonic plates meet.
What causes the vibrations felt during an eartyhquake?
They are caused by large rocks cracking under stress and sesmic waves that are created
What is a epicenter?
Its the location where seimic waves reach the surface of the tectonic plates.
How are tsunamies caused?
When one tectomic plate shifts below another tectonic plate under water, the water is displaced. Therefore an enormouse amount of water is pushed by the earthquakes energy.
Whitch scale is used to measure the power of an earthquake?
The Modified Murcullie, a scale for measuring the power of earthquakes from 1 to 10 it was developed by Charles Richer in 1935. This scale is still used, although it was modified in 1977.
Describe the the theory of plate tectomics.
That the Earths outer shell is devided into several plates that glide over the mantel.
What theory pruposed by Alfred Wegener, did plate tectonics build from?
Alfred Weneger pruposed the continental drift theory in 1912.
Which theory was developed first continental drift theory or plate tectonics?
Continental drift theory was developed in 1912 the plate tectonic theory was developed in 1950 to 1970.
How many major plates are there? And what are they called.
there are 9 they are
- North America
- Pacific
- Eurasian
- African
- Indo/Australian
- Australian
- Indian
- South american
- Antartic
why do tectonic plates move?
The earths mantle moves the plates along with something called convection. Convection is the cycling of a liquid when heated up. When the lower mantle magma gets heated up by the inner and outer core that magma flotes to the top and the magma at the top goes to the bottom. With this continuing cycle it pushes along the continents.
What is a mid ocean ridge?
Its the gap between tectonic plates that mantle the Earth.
How do fossle records prove or support Wegeners idea?
Fossle records from both sides of the atlantic showed simmilar plantes, indicating that the land was once joined.
