Q

How are tsunamies caused?

A

When one tectomic plate shifts below another tectonic plate under water, the water is displaced. Therefore an enormouse amount of water is pushed by the earthquakes energy.

Q

Whitch scale is used to measure the power of an earthquake?

A

The Modified Murcullie, a scale for measuring the power of earthquakes from 1 to 10 it was developed by Charles Richer in 1935. This scale is still used, although it was modified in 1977.

Q

why do tectonic plates move?

A

The earths mantle moves the plates along with something called convection. Convection is the cycling of a liquid when heated up. When the lower mantle magma gets heated up by the inner and outer core that magma flotes to the top and the magma at the top goes to the bottom. With this continuing cycle it pushes along the continents.

Q

Whats the name of the most recent super continent?

A

The most recent super continent was Pangaea.

17
Q

what is the alternative terms learned for

Mantle and crust

A

Mantle: Astenosphere

Crust: Lithosphere

18
Q

What are the thee types of plate boundaries?Describe.

A
  1. Divergant
  2. Convergant
  3. Transform
19
Q

Describe a divergant boundary

A

When plates move away from each other, magma comes up from the mantle, when it reaches the crust, it cooles and formes new igneous rock.

20
Q

Describe a convergant boundary.

A

Plates move towards each other. When an oceanic plate meets a continental or another oceanic plate subduction occures. this means the heavier plate slides under the other plate. Volcanoes and ocean trenches often occur here.

21
Q

Describe a transformation boundary.

A

Two tectonic plates that rub together to create earthquakes.

22
Q

What gas is released from volcanoes?

A

Sulfur dioxide

23
Q

What is the difference between the lithosphere and the athosphere?

A

The lithosphere is the mantle and outer core while the asothenspere is the inner core.

24
Q

Describe the theory of continental drift?

A

The tectonic plates are moved with something called convecion. This is when the magma from the inner core gets heated up and floats to the top to cool down. whilw the magma at the top goes to the bottom.

25
Q

What is the difference between the epicenter and the focus of an earthquake?

A

The focus of an earthquake is underground where the tectonic plates meetwhile the epicenter is above the focus of an earthquake.
