Q

What is Bacteria?

A

Bacteria is a single-celled micro organism that can cause food poisoning and sour thoughts. Yet they can also be helpful. Bacteria helps digest our food and is found in yogurt. They where the first lifeforms ever to be seen on earth.

Q

What did Dr Howard Florey and Dr Ernest Chain do?

A

They isolated Penicillin (A mould that prevented bacterial growth). They treated/experimented with mice and then with people. They found out how to create a mass of Penicillin with the help of Oxford University in England.

17
Q

How does carbon dioxide help bread rise?

A

Carbon Dioxide is one of the major gasses responsible for livening in baking. In cakes, it comes from the reaction of sodium bicarbonate under acidic conditions. In bread making, the yeast organisms expel carbon dioxide as they feed off sugars.

18
Q

Witch micro organisms are entirely unicellular?

A

Protozoa and Bacteria are entirely unicellular.

19
Q

What does Salmonella bacteria cause?

A

This bacteria causes food poisoning.

20
Q

What do viruses need to survive?

A

Viruses need a living cell to survive and reproduce.

21
Q

Explain the role of yeast in the process of making bread.

A

Yeast eats the sugar in bread dough and whilst consuming the sugar the yeast organisms expel carbon dioxide that makes bread rise and has pockets of gas.

22
Q

What does yeast produce?

A

Carbon dioxide and alcohol.

23
Q

What are two ways bacteria can be helpful.

A
  • Helps digest your food

- Used to make cheese and yogurt

24
Q

What bacteria causes throat infections?

A

This bacteria is called Streptococcus.

25
Q

What are the three illnesses viruses cause?

A

Measles, chicken pox and influenza.

26
Q

What is condensation?

A

The processes of when a gas turns into a liquid.

27
Q

What is sublimation?

A

The process of a solid turning straight into a gas.

28
Q

What is deposition?

A

When a gas turns straight into a solid.

29
Q

How are virus infections prevented?

A

They can be prevented using vaccines.

30
Q

How are bacterial infections prevented?

A

They are treated using antibiotics.

31
Q

What are two ways fungi can be helpful?

A
  • They are used in the indigence to make bread and beer.

- Penicillin is a type of fungi that is used to treat bacterial infections.

32
Q

What is a substance that sublimates?

A

Carbon dioxide is known as dry ice when it is cold enough to be a solid.
