Yr 9 Ecology Flashcards
Why do some organisms depend on other organisms for
For food, shelter or protection
What is collaboration
Individuals working together for shared benefit.
Members of the same species working together to achieve a common goal
What is symbiosis
An interaction of between two different organisms where at least one of them benefits. The three types of symbiosis are; Mutualism Parasitism Commensalism
What is mutualism
Two different organisms benefit from the interaction.
Parasitism
An interaction where one species (the parasite) lives in or on another species (the host) from which it obtains food, shelter or other requirements
What is commensalism
An interaction between populations of two species in which one species (the commensal) benefits from another without damaging the host
What is the difference between predator-prey and parasitism
When a predator kills something, it is necessary for its survival, but for parasites, it is not even desirable because a parasite lives on or in its host.
What are the two types of adaptations
Behavioral and physical
What is an instinctive (behavioral) adaptation
Something that happens naturally and doesn’t need to be learned
- defending oneself
- migrating
What is a learned (behavioral) adaptation
Obtained by interacting with the environment and cannot be passed on to the next generation except by teaching
What are behavioral adaptations
The Animals actions.
What are physical adaptations
Body structures that allow an animal to find and consume food, defend itself, reproduce its species and survive in its environment
What are some physical adaptations
- camouflage
- mimicry (looking or sounding like another living organism)
- chemical defenses
- body coverings and parts
What is an abiotic factor
A physical factor
What is a biotic factor
Living things
