What is an atom
Something that cannot be broken down into smaller parts
What is an atom
Two or more elements chemically bonded together
What is a mixture
Different atoms that are nkr chemically bonded together
How can we spreads a mixture into its different substances
Chromatography
Filtration
Distillation
What is chromatography
Where we have filter paper with a dot of the mixture placed a cm above the water line
Filter paper is dipped into the water slightly, water gets drawn up the paper due to capillary action which drags part of the mixture with it
Particles that end up highest on the paper are lighter particles
If it is ink for example different coloirs will be seen
Why do we draw the line in pencil in the chromatography practical
The line will not move up the filter paper due to the water
What is filtration
When particles are removed from water using filter paper in a funnel put the stuff in the top and let the water drip through
Hopefully sand should just be left in the filter paper
What is distillation
Removes solute from a solvent like salt from water
Heat the mixture, water evaporates condensing tube condenses it
Water gets collected in a beaker hopefully leaving salt behind in the flask
What does an atom look like
Nucleus in the middle which consists of protons and neutrons
Electrons orbit the outside
What is the charge of a proton
+1
What do electrons have a charge of
-1
What charge do neutrons have
Neutral
What do protons need to have the same number of
Electrons and protons need to have the same number so they are neutral
What happens when an atom looses electrons
It becomes an ion
When you get rid of a negative charge what happens
It becomes a positive charge
What does the group number on the periodic table tell us
How many electrons are in the outer shell
What are the rows called on the periodic table
Periods
What do periods on the periodic table tell us
How many shells it has
What happens to metals
They gain electrons when they bond to something else
What is group 1 on the periodic table called
Alkali metals
What is special about the alkali metals
Not a lot of energy is required to move the atom
What do alkali metals react with and form
Water to form an alkali solution
What is the name of group 7 on the periodic table
The halogens
What happens to the halogen as you move down the group
They become less reactive because the outer shell is further from the nucleus so it isn’t as easy for the electron to be transferred onto it
