jurisdiction of the children’s court
The criminal division of the children’s court deals with matters relating to criminal offences by children and young people between the ages of 10 and 17
probation
least intensive supervisory order available, usually given to those who have offended once or twice before, duration 12-18 months, must obey youth justice order and their instructions and must not reoffend
youth supervision order
subject to a higher level than probation, community-based order given to those found guilty of quite a serious offence or numerous, or committed under 18, normally finished max 12 months sometimes 18
does community service
youth attendance order
direct alternative to being detained in custody, for 15+, to ppl found guilty of serious offences, appeared numerous times, commit crime when under 18, max 12 months, have to attend max 10hrs of youth justice unit a week
parole
Parole allows young people who have been sentenced to a period of youth detention to serve part of their custodial sentence in the community under the supervision of a parole officer, enabling gradual reintegration into the community
dual track system
dual track allows adult courts to sentence young offenders[ under 21] to serve part of a custodial sentence in youth detention instead of prison
intended to prevent vulnerable youth from entering the adult system
youth justice centre order
the most serious sanction available for children aged above 15. The maximum sentence is 3 years for a single offence and 4 years for 2 or more.
youth residential centre orders
most serious sanction available for children under 15yrs. Max sentence is 1years for a single offence and 2 years for two or more offences

comprised of melbourne youth justice centre [which has 15-18yr old men] and melb youth residential centre[10-14yr old males, 10-21 yr old women]
Malmsbury Youth Justice Precinct
comprises two youth justice centres and is located 100k out of Melb near Kyneton
Malmsbury Youth Justice Precinct - young men 15-20 when remanded or sentenced to Youth Justice Centre order
Malmsbury Senior Youth Justice Centre- low-security young offenders 18-23
