Overview
Warwick, Salisbury and March landed in Kent June 1460
Ahead of them they sent a manifesto declaring loyalty to the King but condemned his poverty and absence of justice
Reason 1: Warwick and Calais
Henry had attempted to retake control of Calais, Somerset made Captain of Calais 5th Oct 1459. Calais defended by Warwick’s brother Lord Fauconberg
Jan 1460 raid on sandwich led Yorkists recapturing Earl of Warwick’s impounded ships. Somerset further embarrassed by defeat in Battle of Nenwham Bridge
Warwick was much loved in Calais and was able to use time to build up force to invade England and visited York in Ireland to discuss moves
Warwick was regarded hero of people and popular affinity of commoners. Welcomed into London with open arms, merchants saw Calais as trading post
Reason 2: City of London
2nd July 1460, London opened its gated to Warwick, Salisbury and March
London had been suffering from economic depression and Henry VI minister showed favouritism to ‘alien merchants’ foreign merchants taxed them lower
London was a source of taxation, loans and gifts was virtually Bank of England big victory
Gave Yorkists psychological boost, London’s power was vital in legitimising a monarchs power

Angry at Warwick’s refuge of Calais ordered London wool traders to trade elsewhere, annoyed at her they switched sides
