Parliament of Devils Flashcards
Margaret’s position after Yorkist flee
Tremendous strength.
She could have used this power to provide a broad based government and in many ways she did- eg Yorkists such as Duke of Norfolk received a role in her government
Still saw York as a threat
What was the Parliament
20th November 1459- gained its nickname due to its viciousness
Stripped York, March, Warwick, Salisbury of all lands and titles essentially bankrupted. BUT she also attained their heirs
Justified this by calling York a scheming monster and sentenced them to death
Somnium Viglantis
Accompanied the parliament
Laid out case against Yorkist, explained that rebellion against the King could never be justified, claimed Yorkists broke these vows more than once (St Albans, Blore Heath)
Also included proviso for Henry to forgive any lords that submitted to him. Yorkists accepting guilt but did not include Salisbury
Problems of Parliament
Extreme nature appalled nobles who held middle ground, broke laws of inheritance went too far
Unfair to disinherit innocent offspring
Yorkists left galvanised
Margaret was unable to dislodge Yorkists from their refuges eg even though Wiltshire was made Lieutenant of Ireland was unable to dislodge to go due to York’s support
Warwick was able to build up a strong force
