Yoga
Ancient practice that brings together body and mind originating in India 3000 years ago, NOT a religion
3 focuses of yoga
Physical - postures and conditions the body
Mental - focuses the mind by teaching concentration on mindfulness
Spiritual - controlled breathing to bring together all aspects of the body
Sinking breath
Longer exhales used during yoga stretches to move into a deeper stretch
Yoga language
The language use by the yoga instructor is very specifically chosen to best facilitate an individuals personal best to the activities
Modifications to yoga
Used to allow for those who cannot perform the complete movements of yoga including modified poses, chair yoga, use of blocks, etc
Therapeutic yoga
Application of yoga postures and practice to the treatment of health conditions and involves instruction in yogic practices and teachings to prevent, reduce, or alleviate structural, physiological, emotional and spiritual suffering
Yoga physiologic response (6)
- Shift balance from sympathetic nervous system to parasympathetic (slowing breathing and heart rate, decreasing BP, lowering cortisol levels, and increasing blood flow to viscera
- protection against conditions such as arthritis, osteoporosis, and back pain by taking joints thru full range of motion, as well as increasing proprioception and balance
- inhibit stress and promote quality of life for cancer patients, as tumors are exacerbated by stress (decreased immune functioning)
- improved cardiovascular efficiency and homeostatic control of the body
- decrease in post chemo induced nausea, as well as decreased anxiety, depression, and distress
- addiction treatment can see positive influence with yoga, particularly eating disorders
