- English became known as a language for the first time
- strong German influence due to settling of angles, saxons, jutes
- viking invasions so old norse entered the language in the form of place names, animal words, body parts, family words and war/maritime words

what happened in the Middle English period from 1066 to 1500
A
- battle of Hastings 1066
- Norman French entered with the addition of Romance language foundations
- initial divide between peasants using germanic variants and nobility using French but these soon merged
- conflict between French and English crowns –> hundred year war
- this led too questions about the use of French in English
- standardisation began and the great vowel shift dramatically influenced pronunciations
