  • English became known as a language for the first time
  • strong German influence due to settling of angles, saxons, jutes
  • viking invasions so old norse entered the language in the form of place names, animal words, body parts, family words and war/maritime words

what happened in the Middle English period from 1066 to 1500

A
  • battle of Hastings 1066
  • Norman French entered with the addition of Romance language foundations
  • initial divide between peasants using germanic variants and nobility using French but these soon merged
  • conflict between French and English crowns –> hundred year war
  • this led too questions about the use of French in English
  • standardisation began and the great vowel shift dramatically influenced pronunciations
