1775
Marine Corps created on November 10th, 1775 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at Tuns Tavern by resolution of continental congress which raised two battalions of Marines. Captain Samuel Nicholas became commander of two battalions, also considered the first commandant.
1776
First Marine Landing took place during Revolutionary War. Marines invaded New Providence Island in Bahamas for seizure of guns and supplies. Uniform of the day was stiff leather stock worn around neck, thus nickname “leatherneck.”
1805 - “Shores of Tripoli”
Marines stormed Barbary Pirates stronghold at Burma on “Shores of Tripoli.” Marines raised Stars and Stripes first time in Eastern Hemisphere.
1834 - “Navy’s Whore”
Marines organized under the Department of Navy.
1847 - “Mexicans to Heaven”
During Mexican War, Marines occupied the “Halls of Montezuma” during the Battle of Chapultepec in Mexico City. Royal palace fell to invading Marines, who were first U.S. troops to enter the capital. Marines also help take California.
1859 - “Hate Crime”
Under command of Colonel Robert E. Lee, U.S. Army, Marines stormed U.S. arsenal at Harper Ferry to put down attempted slave revolt led by abolitionist John Brown.
1868 - “EGA is Great”
Marine Corps adopted an emblem consisting of Eagle, Globe, and Anchor. Brigadier General Jacob Zeilin, 7th Commandant, modified British (Royal) Marine emblem to depict the U.S. Marines as American and Maritime.
- Globe and Anchor signify worldwide service and sea traditions
- Spread Eagle is a symbol of the Nation itself.
1883 - “188FEE”
Official motto of Marine Corps, “Semper Fidelis,” (Latin for “Always Faithful”) was adopted. Commonly heard as its abbreviation, “Semper Fi”
1900 - “Gl00ves”
In support of foreign policy, Marines from ships on the Asiatic station defended the American Legation in Peking, China during the Boxer Rebellion. Marines were part of a multinational defense force that protected the Legation Quarter against attack. This small defense force held out against the Boxers until a relief force reached Peking and ended rebellion.
1912 - “Lot of Ones”
Marine Corps established its Aviation Unit. Marine Major, Alfred A. Cunningham was the first pilot. His first solo flight (1st LT. at the time) occurred on August 1st, 1912.
1917 - “19Fourrage”
Marines landed as part of the American Force in France; Marines participated in 8 distinct operations, distinguishing themselves and were awarded numerous decorations, one of them being the French Fourrage. Currently still being worn by members of 5th and 6th Marines.
1993 - “FMF for You and Me”
Marine Corps reorganized into the Fleet Marine Force, formally establishing the “Command and Administrative Relations” between Fleet and Marine Corps.
Marine Corps established Marine Corps Equipment Board was established at Quantico, Virginia and Marines began to devote long hours to testing and developing materials for landing operations and expeditionary services.
1965 - “G’s Un-Alive”
Marines landed in South Vietnam, conducted large-scale offensive operations throughout the course of the war. Participated in the pacification program designed to win the support of the local population.
In response to attempted coup of the local government, Marines landed in the Dominican Republic to evacuate and protect U.S. citizens. Marines formed core of multinational force that quickly restored the peace.
1982 - “The Peace”
Marines deployed to Beirut, Lebanon as a part of multinational peacekeeping force in efforts to restore peace and order. Further displayed the Marine concept of a “Force in Readiness.”
1983 - “The Price”
October 23rd, 1983. A suicide truck bomb attack on the building serving as barracks for the 1st Battalion 8th Marines killing 241 Americans and wounding 70 others.
Last Marine unit withdrew July of 1984.
