Archibald Henderson

A

Brigadier General Henderson became Commandant in 1820, held command for 39 years until is death in 1859. He lead the Corps through the: Indian Wars, War with Mexico, opening of China, and disorders in Central America.

Nicknamed, “The Grand Old Man of the Marine Corps.” Introduced higher standards of personal appearance, training, discipline, and have marine corps known as professional military force.

John Quick

A

Sergeant Major Quick is remembered for his performance in 1898 at Cuzco Well (Guantanamo Bay, Cuba) where he participated in an operation to seize an advanced base for Atlantic Fleet battalions of Marines.

Sergeant Major Quick earned Medal of Honor for semaphoring an emergency lift of the naval bombardment while under Spanish and American shellfire.

Dan Daly

A

Sergeant Major Daly is recognized for earning 2 Medals of Honor.

1st in Chinese Boxer Rebellion
2nd in First Caco War in Haiti

When his unit was pinned down and their attacked stalled during the Battle of Belleau Wood, then Gunnery Sergeant Daly yelled to his men, “Come on you son of a B———, do you want to live forever?”

Louis B. “Chesty” Puller

A

Lieutenant General Puller served in Nicaragua through political unrest and rebellions activities in 1930. Puller and about 32 Marines became famous for their ability to engage rebel groups and bandits while scouring the jungles in a wide area of Nicaragua to the Honduran border. Puller became known as “Tiger of the Mountains” (1930).

Marine Corps mascot English Bulldog named is named “Chesty” for this brace and fine Marine Corps Officer. He was awarded 14 personal decorations in combat, campaign medals, and unit citations. Including the Distinguished Service Cross and his FIFTH Navy Cross for heroism, during the fight to break out of the Korean Chosin Reservoir area.

Gregory R. “Pappy” Boyington

A

Major Boyington is recognized for Marine prowess in aerial dogfights. He commanded VMH-214, the “Black Sheep” during WW2. By end of war, Major was recognized as the Marine Corps top ranking flying ace with 28 victories “kills.”

On October 5th, 1945 he was awarded Medal of Honor for his actions against Japanese forces in Central Solomon Area from Sept. 12, 1943 - Jan. 3, 1944.

A

Corporal Ira Hayes, a Pima Indian, was one of the Marines immortalized in the now famous photo taken of the second flag raising on Mount Suribachi.

Opha Mae Johnson

A

August 13, 1918 —— Private Johnson became first ENLISTED woman in the Marine Corps. Her enlistment reflected was a reflection of the dramatic change in the status of women brought about by the entry of the U.S. into WW1.

Marine Reserve (F) was official title by which the Marine Corps first enlisted women were known by. Better known by as “Skirt Marines” and “Marinettes.”

Margaret A. Brewer

A

Brigadier General Brewer, then Colonel, served as Director of Woman Marines (WM) from 1973-1977. She was the 7th and the last, only post-World War woman to hold position.

Became Marine Corps first general officer on May 11, 1978.

Robert E. Bush

A

May 2, 1945 —— durning the Battle of Okinawa, Hospital Apprentice First Class Bush administered blood plasma to a wounded Marine Officer with one hand, and returned fire with the other admist battle conditions.

He was presented the Medal of Honor by president Harry S. Truman on October 5, 1945 during “Nimitz Day.” He was the youngest WW2 Navy Man to receive Medal of Honor.

Robert R. Ingram

A

March 28, 1966 —— Petty Officer Ingram accompanied the point platoon as it aggressively engaged an outpost of a North Vietnamese Army (NVA) battalion Republic of Vietnam.

Suddenly, a tree line of roughly 100 NVA soldiers fired intense automatic rifle fire. Oblivious to danger, he crawled across battlefield to reach a downed Marine. While administering aid, a bullet went through palm of his hand. Receiving two more wounds, the THIRD was life-threatening but he continued to resupply and aid others.

While dressing the head of another corpsman, he received a fourth bullet wound.

From 1600-Sunset, he doctored his Marines. Petty Officer Ingram was awards Medal of Honor for his gallant actions which saved many lives.

Jason Dunham

A

On April 14, 2004 —— Corporal Dunham led his Combined Anti-Armor Team to an engagement in Husaybah, Iraq to provide fire support to their Battalion Commanders Convoy, which was ambushed. While wrestling an insurgent, he saw a grenade being released.

Without hesitation, he covered the grenade with his helmet and his body, bearing the brunt of the explosion to shield Marines from blast. He was awarded Medal of Honor, and a US Navy Destroyer now bears his name.

Dakota Meyer

A

On September 8, 2009 —— Corporal Meyer held security at a patrol at a rally point while other members of his team moved on foot into the village Ganjgal in Kunar Province, Afganistán. More than 50 enemy fighters ambushed the patrol, firing RPGs, mortars, and machine guns from houses and fortified positions on the slope above.

He took the exposed gunner position in the gun-truck as they made several trips to evacuate dead and wounded members of his team, as well Afghan soldiers.

He was awarded Medal of Honor due to his daring initiative and bold fighting spirit through the 6-Hour battle significantly disrupting the enemy’s attack.
